Cleaner Fish Labroides dimidiatus Presence Does Not Indirectly Affect Demersal Zooplankton

چکیده

Coral reef mutualisms involve complex trophic ecological relationships that produce indirect effects. Excluding mutualistic cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus from reefs indirectly increases the abundance of many fishes and reduces demersal stages their ectoparasitic prey (gnathiid isopods). Whether cleaners affect populations planktivorous consume zooplankton, consequently rest zooplankton community — via presumed changes in planktivory is unknown. Therefore, using a long-term manipulation on patch (July 2000 to December 2012, Great Barrier Reef), we tested whether treatment (removal or control) affects diversity, biomass, abundance, diversity. Fish surveys, 9 12 years after removing revealed fewer removal compared control for one three most abundant planktivores, but not total (Pomacentridae, 26 species), composition. Emerging were sampled during day night over nine sampling trips across years. There was no effect post-removal values, with pre-removal values July 2000, composition (34 taxa). Zooplankton showed diel differences, occasionally higher at night. also taxa contributing this dissimilarity [Cirripeda nauplii, Facetotecta (Arthopoda), Oikopleuridae (Chordata)]. diversity did differ among times, January 2002 relative differed all times. The lack detectable effects presence (non-gnathiid) may partly be due cleaners’ variable result invertebrate other processes investigated here. Nevertheless, pronounced temporal observed likely influence coral interactions.

Are cleaner fish, Labroides dimidiatus, inequity averse?

Please cite this article in press as: Raihani, N dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.2012.06.023 Inequity aversion (IA), a willingness to incur temporary costs to prevent unequal outcomes, is common in humans and thought to be beneficial in the context of cooperative relationships with nonkin, since it might allow individuals to regulate contributions to cooperative activities. Attempts to address whe...

Cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus manipulate client reef fish by providing tactile stimulation.

The cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus often touches 'client' reef fish dorsal fin areas with its pelvic and pectoral fins. The relative spatial positions of cleaner and client remain constant and the cleaner's head points away from the client's body. Therefore, this behaviour is not compatible with foraging and the removal of client ectoparasites. As clients seek such 'tactile stimulation', i...

Long-Term Effects of the Cleaner Fish Labroides dimidiatus on Coral Reef Fish Communities

Cleaning behaviour is deemed a mutualism, however the benefit of cleaning interactions to client individuals is unknown. Furthermore, mechanisms that may shift fish community structure in the presence of cleaning organisms are unclear. Here we show that on patch reefs (61-285 m²) which had all cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus (Labridae) experimentally removed (1-5 adults reef⁻¹) and which we...

Ultraviolet-B Wavelengths Regulate Changes in UV Absorption of Cleaner Fish Labroides dimidiatus Mucus

High-energy wavelengths in the ultraviolet-B (UVB, 280-315 nm) and the UVA (315-400-nm) portion of the spectrum are harmful to terrestrial and aquatic organisms. Interestingly, UVA is also involved in the repair of UV induced damage. Organisms living in shallow coral reef environments possess UV absorbing compounds, such as mycosporine-like amino acids, to protect them from UV radiation. While ...

Cleaner Wrasses Labroides dimidiatus Are More Cooperative in the Presence of an Audience

Humans may help others even in situations where the recipient will not reciprocate [1-5]. In some cases, such behavior can be explained by the helpers increasing their image score, which will increase the probability that bystanders will help them in the future [5-7]. For other animals, the notion that many interactions take place in an environment containing an audience of eavesdropping bystan...
